RVTs – Level Up Your Career

The veterinary profession is constantly evolving – and so is the role of veterinary technologists. If you’re looking for ways to change up and enhance your career, consider some of these options.

Take on Leadership Roles in your Practice

This doesn’t necessarily mean management, there are several ways to take a leadership role.

  • Research, develop and lead your hospital programs
    • Herd health and vaccination programs
    • Nutrition consultations
    • Puppy and kitten behaviour and socialization
    • Mentoring students and new staff
    • Post surgical rehabilitation
  • Gain leadership experience through volunteering with veterinary associations
  • Certified Veterinary Practice Manager program

Expand Your Knowledge

RVTs are life-long learners and passionate professionals. Several areas of veterinary medicine now have specialty academies and societies for RVTs who are looking to really dive deep into their area of interest. Achieving a VTS isn’t the only way to expand your knowledge, consider taking supplemental courses or reaching out to specialty or referral practices for mentoring and hands-on learning opportunities.

Flexible Work Opportunities

Making one’s own schedule sounds like a dream – but dreams do become reality!

  • Consider working as a locum or relief RVT in your area
  • Have experience to offer? Become a consultant in your area of interest and provide your services to help practices and professionals
  • Want to work from home? Look no further than tele-triage, insurance and even distance education teaching opportunities
  • Love talking to your peers? Consider a pathway with pharmaceutical, diagnostic and pet food companies.

Learn and Discover

More and more opportunities are expanding for RVTs every day. Connect with your colleagues at conferences, volunteer and network to find out what’s out there! You never know when you’ll connect with a new opportunity or business partner.
